JOHN BENNETT TRIO

JOHN BENNETT with Lucky Oceans and David Hyams

John Bennett, from Bidyadanga in WA’s remote Kimberley country, has emerged as a singer/songwriter with an astounding ability to transport listeners to his home country and transcend cultural barriers.

His self titled debut album, sung in English with references to his native language of Karijarri, received numerous national award nominations and saw John nominated alongside the likes of Gurrumul and Troy Cassar-Daley.

John met well known Fremantle based musicians, David Hyams and Lucky Oceans, in the recording studio and the 3 have been performing ever since at concert shows and festivals – including the opening concert of the 2014 Melbourne festival in Federation Square, sharing the stage with Emma Donovan, Wendy Matthews and Archie Roach.

Both Lucky and David feature prominently on John’s recently released second album “Country is Calling”, produced by David and featuring the cream of WA musicians. Album songs were recognized at the 2018 WAM ‘Song of the year Awards’ with 2 awards and in 2019 he was recognized at the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival with both the “Best Male Artist” and “Best Album” awards. Soon to follow was “Album of the Year” at the WA NAIDOC awards.
John’s songs offer a unique insight into his world: a journey into the remote and beautiful North-West of Australia – songs full of yearning, to be home with his people and celebrations of the important people in his life.
