MISSGENIUS

“A deft flow, sharp lyrical danger and meticulous beat selection is MissGenius, the surprise flare in West Australian music. A First Nations hip hop MC and soul vocalist, MissGenius is a Maduwongga and Noongar woman who grew up in Broome and Perth, WA.

An artist who has written songs for herself since 2015, MissGenius uses music as a tool for strength and peace drawing from her life experiences, producing and recording all her own material in her bedroom. Convinced to play her first live show in 2018 as part of a West Australian Music’s (WAM) Goldfields Esperance Touring Circuit in April, she has since released four tracks.

A previous public speaking and confidence coach for young indigenous women through the Goolarri Media program Goldfields Girl/Kimberley Girl and currently a mentor in the Kimberley region via her own expressive writing program (From the Inside Out), MissGenius hasn’t always lived the lollipops and sunshine life, she shares her life experiences and overcoming those difficult times through these programs, and through her music.

There is a lot in the works for MissGenius, as well as recording her single that was released in November and taking out the “Act-Commit-Belong – Song of the Year Award 2020”, ‘I Don’t Wanna Be’ with RADA Studios legends Matt Gio and Dan Carroll. ‘I Don’t Wanna Be’ is a track that displays MissGenius’ profound vocal tone and addresses the internal turmoil many feel around normative societal expectations – “Sometimes I wanna be thick, but then I wanna be thin”.

Since the end of 2018 MissGenius has started to make noise around WA, she performed at WAMFest Live (November 2018) and Bunuru Festival (January 2019) in Yagan Square, Perth, Briggs’ Bad Apples 2020, smashed her performance and won the Ermaging Artist award at Nannup Festival 2020, and recently guest spoke at the Broome’s Rehabilitation Family Centre (Milliya Rumurra Aboriginal Corporation), following this MissGenius’ most recent live performance had drawn the audience and left them wanting more! RTR FM’s ‘In the Pines’ was a good taste of MissGenius’ hunger for the stage.

Keep your eyes peeled as MissGenius takes Australia by storm.
